Development and implementation of a monitoring project for two rare spiders (Heliophanus dampfi and Lasaeola prona) on bogs within Dyfi SSSI
This project surveyed the arachnid (spider, harvestman and pseudoscorpion) fauna of five bogs within Dyfi SSSI - Cors Fochno, Ynys Greigiog, Tynohir, Gogarth Bog and Ynys-hir - during 2021 and early 2022. The primary aim was to develop new monitoring protocols, based on vacuum sampling, for the two Nationally Rare spiders Heliophanus dampfi (IUCN Vulnerable) and Lasaeola prona (IUCN Endangered). No monitoring with the development of targets for these two species is known from other UK sites. Both species are qualifying features of Dyfi SSSI.

This survey was conducted between 6th June 2021 and 21st March 2022 across bog sites within Dyfi SSSI. Work was primarily undertaken at Cors Fochno, but visits were also made to Ynys Greigiog, Tynohir, Gogarth Bog and Ynys-hir. At each site widespread sampling points were made across the area to gain a wider understanding of the arachnid faunas of these bogs: Cors Fochno (45 sample points; Ynys Greigiog (16 sample points); Tynohir (10 sample points); Gogarth Bog (5 sample points); Ynys-hir (11 sample points). The survey was targeted towards finding Heliophanus dampfi and Lasaeola prona, ensuring sampling was undertaken in areas where previous records were known. However, effort was also made to record these species from new parts of the bogs to gain a better understanding of their site distribution.
