Development and implementation of a monitoring project for two rare spiders (Heliophanus dampfi and Lasaeola prona) on bogs within Dyfi SSSI
This project surveyed the arachnid fauna, including spiders, harvestmen and pseudoscorpions, of five bog sites within Dyfi SSSI: Cors Fochno, Ynys Greigiog, Tynohir, Gogarth Bog and Ynys-hir, between 2021 and early 2022. The primary aim was to develop monitoring protocols based on vacuum sampling for two Nationally Rare spider species, Heliophanus dampfi (IUCN Vulnerable) and Lasaeola prona (IUCN Endangered), both of which are qualifying features of Dyfi SSSI. The survey sought to improve understanding of the distribution, habitat requirements and population status of these species across the bog systems, whilst also documenting the wider arachnid assemblages present. Sampling was undertaken across a total of 87 survey points, providing valuable baseline information to support future monitoring and conservation management.

Survey work was undertaken between 6 June 2021 and 21 March 2022 across five bog sites within Dyfi SSSI: Cors Fochno, Ynys Greigiog, Tynohir, Gogarth Bog and Ynys-hir. Sampling was primarily conducted using standardised vacuum-sampling techniques, with survey effort focused on areas known to support, or with the potential to support, Heliophanus dampfi and Lasaeola prona. A total of 45 sample points were surveyed at Cors Fochno, 16 at Ynys Greigiog, 10 at Tynohir, 5 at Gogarth Bog and 11 at Ynys-hir. In addition to revisiting locations with previous records of the target species, surveys were undertaken in previously unsampled areas to improve understanding of species distribution across the sites. Specimens collected during sampling were identified and recorded to develop monitoring methodologies for the target species and to document the wider arachnid fauna of the bog habitats.
