Survey of the caddisfly Limnephilus tauricus at Cors Erddreiniog National Nature Reserve (NNR) in 2022
A survey of Cors Erddreiniog National Nature Reserve (NNR) was undertaken to update knowledge of the status and distribution of the rare caddisfly Limnephilus tauricus, a species known in Wales only from this site. The survey also sought to determine whether the closely related and even rarer caddisfly Limnephilus pati, which has not previously been recorded from the reserve or elsewhere in Wales, was present within suitable habitat. Surveys were conducted between June and August 2022 using light traps deployed at selected locations across the reserve. As the light-trapping methodology also attracted other nocturnal insects, the survey additionally recorded macro- and micro-moth species present at the site. The resulting data improve understanding of the distribution and status of L. tauricus and contribute to the wider knowledge of the reserve's invertebrate fauna.

Data were collected using light traps positioned at selected locations across the reserve to target adult caddisflies, particularly Limnephilus tauricus and Limnephilus pati. Trap locations were chosen to sample suitable habitat within the reserve and to maximise the likelihood of detecting the target species. In addition to caddisflies, macro- and micro-moths attracted to the light traps were identified and recorded. Species records derived from the survey were used to assess the distribution and status of L. tauricus and to investigate the potential presence of L. pati within the reserve.
