The Distribution of the Narrow-mouthed Whorl Snail Vertigo angustior on Whiteford Burrows & Cwm Ivy Marsh - September 2021
Whiteford Burrows is a dune system on the north-west coast of the Gower Peninsula and forms part of the Carmarthen Bay Dunes/Twyni Bae Caerfyrddin Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The Narrow-mouthed Whorl Snail (Vertigo angustior), an Annex II species under the Habitats Directive, was first recorded at Whiteford Burrows in 1983, representing the first live record for Wales and western Britain. Previous surveys have been undertaken at the site between 1983 and 2018. This 2021 survey was carried out to improve understanding of the species' distribution within the dune system, including areas not previously surveyed and the recently established marine-terrestrial transition zone at Cwm Ivy Marsh. A total of 29 survey locations were assessed across Whiteford Burrows and Cwm Ivy Marsh between 27 and 29 September 2021.

Survey work was undertaken between 27 and 29 September 2021 at 29 locations within Whiteford Burrows and Cwm Ivy Marsh. Survey sites were selected to investigate the recently established upper saltmarsh transition zone at Cwm Ivy Marsh and previously unsurveyed areas within the northern and central parts of the dune system. Field survey methods included visual examination of vegetation and ground litter; beating vegetation onto a white gridded tray and examining collected material using a ×6 magnifier; and sieving dry moss together with fresh and dead plant material through a two-tier 2 mm and 0.5 mm sieve stack. Survey results were used to determine the presence and distribution of Vertigo angustior within suitable habitat.
