A survey of rare coastal species of the moss genus Bryum in Wales in September 2015
This report presents the results of a 2015 survey of seven sand-dune systems in Wales to assess the status of three rare dune-slack moss species of the genus Bryum (B. calophyllum, B. knowltonii and B. warneum). The survey revisited sites previously surveyed in 2001 and assessed current distribution, population status and habitat condition. The report identifies continuing declines associated with the loss of early-successional dune-slack habitat, confirms the loss of B. calophyllum from its only known Welsh site, and highlights the importance of active dune processes and habitat management for the conservation of rare coastal bryophytes.

Field surveys were undertaken during September 2015 at seven Welsh sand-dune systems: Kenfig Burrows, Merthyr Mawr, Whiteford Burrows, Morfa Dyffryn, Morfa Harlech, Tywyn Aberffraw and Newborough Warren. Survey work focused on locating and assessing populations of Bryum calophyllum, B. knowltonii and B. warneum, and comparing findings with those from surveys undertaken in 2001. Site selection and habitat searches targeted early-successional dune-slack environments considered suitable for rare coastal Bryum species. Species records were collected through field observation, GPS location recording, habitat assessment, photography and voucher specimen collection. Population status, habitat condition and management measures were evaluated to assess factors influencing species persistence and colonisation opportunities within Welsh dune systems.
