Identification of focal sites was determined by Red squirrel presence, red squirrel population, the magnitude of grey squirrel threat, Woodland type and size, Suitability of habitat, Landscape defendability, % of large-seeded broadleaves in buffer zone, Landowner support, Involvement of local community, management potential of the site and management potential of buffer. Data quality was assessed using age of records and comprehensiveness of survey. Each of the criteria were assessed on a scale of poor to excellent. The WSF decided which sites are robust for the future of red squirrel populations. The 2010 data reflect the focal site boundaries agreed through the above process. WSF can review and update the focal site boundaries as per the conservation plan. NB the plan was reviewed in 2018, The Red squirrel conservation plan for Wales, 2018. The 2023 data reflects changes agreed by the WSF.
