Winter Gull Survey
These data were collected as part of the Winter Gull Survey (WinGS) project which is a UK wide survey coordinated by the BTO and funded by the BTO, Defra and country nature conservation bodies. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is the owner of the Welsh part of the data. The project aims to produce revised wintering population estimates for non-breeding gulls in the UK and its constituent countries, and also to assess numbers of each species in autumn.
Information will be provided for all gull species, but with a focus on Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Mediterranean Gull Ichthyaetus melanocephalus, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull and Great Black-backed Gull as the six most numerous and widespread species that occur in the UK during the non-breeding seasons. Mediterranean Gulls have been added as an additional target species for WinGS, recognising their increased use of UK inland and coastal waters across breeding and non-breeding seasons.

The data collection is scheduled to run over two winters (2023/24 and 2024/25) with additional data collection due to be carried out in autumn 2024. Analysis and reporting will be carried out after the final round of data collection in January 2025, and
The data in this spreadsheet are raw data collected during the first winter (2023/24) and are unvalidated - data validation will take place during the subsequent stages of the project including data analysis and it is possible that some counts may be amended following this validation process.
It is also important to note that these data are incomplete and do not provide a full estimate of the numbers of each species in Wales. Further surveys are scheduled to be carried out during the second survey winter (2024/25) and the subsequent analysis stage will use the full data set to produce an updated winter population estimate for Wales.
