Survey of the Black Bog Ant Formica picea on Cors Goch, Llanllwch SSSI in 2024
This dataset comprises the results of a survey undertaken in August 2024 to assess the status and distribution of the Black Bog Ant (Formica picea) at Cors Goch Llanllwch SSSI. The survey focused on locating and counting ant solaria (nest mounds) to determine the current abundance and distribution of the species south of the railway line. The report provides an assessment of the population status of Black Bog Ant at the site and informs future conservation management and monitoring of this rare wetland species.

To assess the number of solaria present, the site was walked by two surveyors on 20 August 2024. Surveyors worked from east to west and back again in transects running parallel to the old drainage ditches. They worked in parallel, covering transects approximately 4 m wide (2 m on either side of each surveyor), to maximise habitat coverage while avoiding double counting of solaria. Areas of mown, grazed, or naturally shorter vegetation were used as the principal transect routes. Areas of taller vegetation were also surveyed using zig-zag ("W") search patterns to ensure comprehensive site coverage.
