A survey of key insect species on selected SSSIs in South Wales (2025)
Dataset comprising survey records for a range of nationally scarce and threatened insect species collected from selected Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and other priority habitats across South Wales during 2025.
Target species included Brachinus crepitans, Chalcis sispes, Chrysis fulgida, Symmorphus crassicornis, Macroplax preyssleri, Ochthebius poweri, Odontoscelis fuliginosa, Plateumaris bracata, Sphaerophoria loewi, Tapinotus sellatus and Tychius quinquepunctatus. Surveys were undertaken to determine the status, distribution and habitat associations of these key insect species and to inform their conservation and management.
The dataset includes species occurrence records and associated field observations collected from a range of coastal, wetland, dune, grassland and brownfield habitats across South Wales.

Data were collected during targeted field surveys undertaken in 2025 by Liam T. Olds and Christian M. Owen of the Colliery Spoil Biodiversity Initiative on behalf of Natural Resources Wales.
Surveys focused on selected SSSIs and other locations in South Wales known or considered suitable for a range of priority and scarce insect species.
Site visits were carried out using species-appropriate survey techniques, including direct observation, habitat assessment and targeted searches of suitable habitat. Species records were identified in the field or verified through subsequent examination where necessary and compiled to assess current distribution, status and habitat requirements.
The resulting dataset was used to support evidence gathering, conservation management and future monitoring of key insect species in Wales.
