Intertidal Monitoring of Sabellaria alveolata in Cardigan Bay Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) 2025
The Habitats Directive requires the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) to achieve favourable conservation status for habitats and species listed in Annex I and Annex II. Under Regulation 9a of the Habitats Regulations (formerly Article 17), the conservation status of these features must be reported every six years. In Wales, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is responsible for this reporting.
Sabellaria alveolata (honeycomb reef worm) forms biogenic reef structures on rocky substrates in intertidal and shallow subtidal marine and estuarine environments. Dense aggregations create reef formations that are important habitat features within SACs.
This dataset provides information on the extent and condition of Sabellaria alveolata reef at surveyed locations.

The data were collected as part of Natural Resources Wales’ programme of feature condition monitoring to support Regulation 9a reporting. Surveys were undertaken at specific locations to measure the extent of Sabellaria alveolata reef and to assess reef quality.
Sabellaria alveolata reefs were identified and mapped based on field survey observations, with reef structures characterised by aggregations of sand- and shell-based tubes forming hummocks, sheets or more complex biogenic formations.
The dataset is derived from targeted surveys undertaken by experienced staff, and confidence in the data is considered high. However, the data represent a snapshot in time and are dependent on survey coverage and methodology.
