Intertidal Monitoring of Eelgrass Zostera noltii Beds in the Menai Strait and Conwy Bay Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) 2005
The Habitats Directive requires the condition of SAC features to be assessed periodically to determine whether favourable conservation status is being maintained. Within the Menai Strait and Conwy Bay SAC, Zostera noltii beds represent an important intertidal habitat supporting a diverse biological community and providing important ecological functions within sheltered coastal environments.
The 2005 survey continued the monitoring programme established in 2004 and reassessed the Zostera noltii beds at Foryd Bay and Traeth Lafan. The survey reviewed the extent, density and condition of seagrass beds, recorded associated epiphytes, ephemeral algae and conspicuous fauna, documented evidence of damage and disease, and further evaluated monitoring techniques developed during the previous year's baseline study. The survey contributed to the refinement of condition assessment methods and improved understanding of the conservation status of intertidal seagrass habitats within the SAC.

Field surveys were undertaken during suitable low-water periods using the methodology developed and tested during the baseline survey programme. Differential GPS was used to record seagrass bed boundaries and sampling locations across both survey areas.
Sampling stations were established along predefined transects and quadrat-based surveys were undertaken to record Zostera noltii cover, associated biological communities, epiphyte occurrence, algal growth, substratum characteristics and indicators of habitat condition. Photographic records and positional information were collected throughout the survey. Resulting field observations were compiled within GIS datasets and used to assess seagrass distribution, habitat condition and the effectiveness of monitoring techniques developed for future SAC condition monitoring.
