SAC Monitoring: Monitoring Great Crested Newts at Johnstown SAC and Deeside and Buckley SAC (2003)
Deeside and Buckley and Johnstown Newt Sites candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) in Flintshire; and Johnstown Newt Sites cSAC in Wrexham support some of the most important areas for newts (Triturus cristatus) in Great Britain. The main aim of the current project was to provide monitoring information on Great Crested Newts adults and juveniles and on Great Crested Newts aquatic and terrestrial habitat within the two cSACs. This was to appraise the condition of great crested newt populations at Johnstown Newt Sites SAC, and Deeside and Buckley Newt Sites SAC and to provide monitoring data on adults and juveniles and on Great Crested Newts aquatic and terrestrial habitat. The dataset consists of: 1) A collation of historical Great Crested Newts surveillance data from known display ponds for the two SACs (then candidate SACs). Records were mainly taken from Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) paper files, but also from Deeside Urban Wildlife Group (DUWG), Flintshire County Council (FCC), and Wrexham County Borough Council (WCBC). Individual CCW recorders names are not known. 2) 2003 monitoring data for presence of Great Crested Newts (Jun), and larvae/adults (Aug-Sept).

The following methodologies were used. 1) Historical data: Mainly torch surveys for adults carried out during the breeding season, but in some cases they include records for larvae as well as additional information such as the presence of fish. 2) a) 2003 monitoring (initial): All ponds visited once in June, to carry out visual inspection for Great Crested Newt eggs on laying substrates near shore. Other bird and fish species noted. 2) b) 2003 monitoring (main assessment): All ponds visited at least once, in most cases twice, during August and September, to record presence of larvae/efts using visual observation, bottle trapping, torch surveying and netting. Environmental conditions within pond and other waterfowl and fish species also noted. 1) Historical data: There was a wide variation in the format and level of detail in the original historical records, and this is reflected in the data collated. Some surveys grouped the results by site, so that it is not possible to distinguish the records for any one particular pond. The lack of a systematic pond numbering system for some sites also meant that it was sometimes difficult to relate records to particular ponds, although most surveys used the new alphanumeric pond references. Wherever possible clarification of records through consultation with CCW and partner organisations was sought. 2) 2003 monitoring: Eggs were only found in a small number of ponds, partly because most would have hatched by the time of the survey.
