Sediment shore impact assessment- monitoring: strandline fauna
The present study investigates the effects of the Sea Empress oil spill on the invertebrate populations of the strandline on two selected soft sediment shores, Pembrey and Pendine, in Carmarthen Bay, South Wales. It represents one of four sampling protocols initially proposed by University of Wales, Swansea (March, 1996) and is the protocol selected by CCW (September, 1996). A comparison can be made between the findings for one of the areas studied (Pembrey) with the results of a previous study on the strandline fauna of the same area (Llewellyn, 1996). Data was used to investigate the effects of the Sea Empress oil spill on the invertebrate populations of strandlines.

Sites were visited during the highest spring tide of the month and the resulting strandline deposit was sampled the following day or as soon as possible afterwards. Due to erosion at Pendine and Pembrey areas were sampled where wave action had made the least physical damage. Eight replicate samples of the strandline were taken on each beach using a 0.25m2 box quadrat which was driven into the sediment to a depth of 15 cm. Surface debris and sand down to a depth of 20 cm was removed, and later sieved to remove the fauna for analysis. The nature of strandline debris was also noted. Increased monitoring efforts and impact assessment following the Sea Empress oil spill. This dataset contributed to the Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas, see separate metadata entry. The only data associated with this project is held within the report.
