Effects of the Sea Empress oil spillage on sensitive sessile marine invertebrate communities
The grounding of the Sea Empress at the mouth of Milford Haven in February 1996 resulted in oil polluted shorelines from the south of St Brides Bay to Pendine Sands. This dataset contains the results of an investigation into the effects of the oiling and its clean-up on sensitive sessile intertidal communities of marine invertebrates and the results of an investigation into possible effects of the oil/clean up on the biology of Alcyonidium species at Dale and Angle. The purpose of these investigations were to survey the lower shore sessile fauna on the north side of St Catherine's Island, Tenby documenting the present composition of the sessile fauna, to assess what changes had occurred since the 1950s and whether any of these might be attributable to the oiling an clean up following the Sea Empress grounding; and investigate the effect of the oil on the reproduction and recruitment of Alcyonidium species (Bryozoa) on Fucus serratus at Dale and Angle in Milford Haven and at control sites in Solva Harbour.

Five 0.2 m x 0.2 m permanent quadrats were established along a transect extending for 82 m on the north side of St Catherine's Island. Percentage cover of conspicuous species calculated using image analysis technique, the growth and regression of the dominant ascidian Morchellium argus was calculated as were the varying cover and degree of fragmentation of the sponges Hymeniacidon perleve and Halichondria panacea. Sessile fauna list compiled by examining the shore during spring tides. In addition to this a survey was done which followed the reproduction and growth of the Alcyonidium spp over the year, inclusive from settlement to reproductive maturity of a cohort. It took area measurements of the Alcyonidium colonies to monitor growth rates and used image analysis package to determine colony areas for growth data.
